Students in the CU News Corps have created an interactive map of properties lost in Colorado’s Black Forest Fire, along with estimated property values. http://cunewscorps.com/black-forest-fire-map-of-homes-destroyed/.

The project is part of the News Corps’ mission to give students real-life experience in covering major breaking news, while providing professional news outlets with high-quality work they can publish to supplement their own coverage. Students enroll in a for-credit class to receive the training. When they are not covering breaking stories they do in-depth, database reporting. Last fall, the News Corps produced analyses of state campaign spending that were picked up by several major news outlets. In the spring of 2013 the students began tracking all gun-related deaths in the state. You can find that work at www.coloradogundeaths.com

Congratulations to Abigail Faires, JMC’s Outstanding Graduate of Spring 2013. The International Media certificate program is honored that one of its own has been selected for this honor two years in a row. Dana Anderson (featured below) earned this honor in 2012.

Abbey earned a GPA of 3.93 in her print journalism major, earned a certificate in Technology Arts and Media and also earned a certificate in International Media. Abbey is the first person in her immediate family to graduate from college. Abbey’s dream has been to travel the world and tell stories about those in need. Her research paper in the course I taught on Global Crises addressed human trafficking. Abbey worked two jobs during her last year of high school and for six months after graduation. Once she got here, Abbey found she had to continue to work at a full time job to pay for the full class load she took every term.

Money did not stop Abbey from working on her dream of international travel: she spent last summer in Tanzania studying its native people and then took her Fall classes at the U of Sussex in England.

4. FAQ

When can I start interning?

Typically, you need to wait until you’ve taken your major’s prerequisite courses, so you’ll probably start interning junior year. See the CU JMC guidelines for more information.

However, there are plenty of great volunteer opportunities — on campus and off — that you can do now! (See “Other On-Campus Media Related Opportunities” sheet (pages 19-20) and “Get Involved” sheet (page 21)

Can the Internship/Career Coordinator help me now?

Yes! You can follow us on Twitter (@JMCInternships) and Facebook (CUJMCInternships) to get the latest on career events, media trends, alumni accomplishments, hot jobs and more. You can visit Christine Mahoney in Armory 1B16 for advice on careers, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, social media profiles…or just to chat about your media-related goals, dreams and ambitions. You can also attend school-year Wed. Workshops (W2) announced on Facebook.

Where do CU JMC students intern?

All over the place! During the 2012-13 academic year, we placed 163 interns, some of whom did more than one internship. While the majority interned in Colorado, we also had students interning in New York City, Chicago, California, Florida, Las Vegas, Texas and Maryland, just to name a few. Big name internships include all the TV network affiliates in Denver, CBS in San Diego, High Noon Entertainment, NBC New York, Karsh/Hagan, Crispin Porter Bogusky, Integer Group, Warner Brothers and Warren Miller Entertainment.

What if I don’t know what I want to do in journalism?

That’s OK – now is the perfect time to explore your options. Consume as much media as you can. Produce your own. Keep an open mind about your educational journey and career.

Let us know how we can help!

5. Eligibility: CU JMC Internship Guidelines

Internship credit is given to students based on # of hours worked:

100 hours per semester = 1 credit hour earned

200 hours per semester = 2 credit hours earned

300 hours per semester = 3 credit hours earned

(Schedule to be negotiated between student and employer)

Employers must meet certain criteria:

Have on-site intern supervisor/mentor

Have higher level of experience than student

Have ability to educate student on “big picture” strategy, such as how student’s work fits into overall project goals, client needs, etc.

Students must take certain prerequisite courses:

Majors:

Advertising: Must take J4931 (undergrads) MUST earn 3 credit hours, but can be split over semesters

News Editorial: Can take Reporting 3–J4502 (undergrads) or Newsgathering 2–J5502 (graduate students) AND can also take elective internship credit for up to 3 additional credits

6. Reporting 3 / Newsgathering 2 Internship Credit

For an internship to count for Reporting 3 (undergraduate level) or Newsgathering 2 (master’s level), students must do substantive work requiring the application of journalistic skills, judgment, values and ethics. The medium, the beat, and the job title are not the core issue. Journalism is.

Students may do internships in print media, online, video, radio and photography (assuming the required pre-requisites have been met). Internships can also involve a variety of specific tasks and beats, including news reporting, feature writing, sports reporting, blogging, multimedia production, and editing. But in every case, the work must be journalistic in nature. Here, in a nutshell, is what we mean by that:

Interns must be independent from the sources in the stories they work on

The work cannot be intended for marketing or public relations

It must be pursued with an objective method designed to insure accuracy and fairness

The work product must be original, not simply an aggregation of material that has already appeared elsewhere (as is common with many blogs)

Truth is the goal, not a preconceived outcome impervious to the facts.

For writers, whether online or in print, this does not mean that the work must consist of reporting and writing for newspapers. But whether it is for a newspaper, a magazine, or a blog, it must involve independent, original, accurate and fair reporting of some sort.

To offer one example, blogging for an online publication could be acceptable if it involved interviewing of appropriate sources, and/or the gathering of information from primary source materials (such as reports, scientific papers, the U.S. Census, etc.). Again, simple aggregation of content that has appeared elsewhere won’t cut it. That said, a journalistic blog post could also include information reported elsewhere. But again, for the work to be considered journalistic it must include some measure of original reporting as added value.

Journalism must underlie the work of student editors, photographers, videographers and radio reporters as well.

We recognize that it will not always be easy to determine whether these guidelines apply to a particular internship. There will certainly be room for interpretation. And we also want to encourage some degree of experimentation. So the decision as to whether a particular internship can count for Reporting 3 or Newsgathering 2 credit will reside with the faculty who teach the course, with input from the JMC internship coordinator.

The journalistic requirements spelled out here apply to all internships that students do as part of the Reporting 3 and Newsgathering 2 classes. Another requirement that applies in all cases is that students must spend a minimum of 16 hours per week working at their internships during the fall or spring semesters and 24 hours a week during the summer, since the summer session course meets for only eight weeks. But we also recognize that internships will vary significantly in their specifics — and we welcome this diversity. Because of that, no size will fit all when it comes to requirements for student productivity. But we can offer some guidance.

For newspaper reporting interns, it’s straightforward: Undergraduate students are expected to have a minimum of 12 published stories over the course of a semester (and by stories we don’t mean briefs). For master’s students the number is 16. For photojournalism interns at newspapers, we have the same expectation — 12 published photographs minimum for undergraduates, and 16 for master’s students.

Beyond reporting and photojournalism at newspapers, it gets more difficult to quantify things. Guidance will be provided at the beginning of the semester, with specifics to be worked out between each student and his or her instructor. Suffice it to say that we want to give our students real-world work experience that they can add to their résumés. These experiences will also help them get started on building a professional network. But résumé- and network-building alone are not sufficient. Students must also come away from their internships with clips or other kinds of work samples that they can incorporate into a professional portfolio. Such a portfolio is, in fact, a required work product of the class.

Lastly, when questions about guidelines, requirements, etc. arise before the start of the semester, students and supervisors should first seek specific guidance from the JMC internship coordinator. In some cases, the coordinator may need to get the instructors assigned to teach the classes involved. Once the semester has begun, the instructors are responsible for answering questions and working with both students and their supervisors to help make the internship experience both productive and grounded in journalism.

7. CU Career Services Internship Credit

If you cannot earn JMC Internship Credit, you may be able to earn credit through CU Career Services, to fulfill your employer’s credit requirements. CU Career Services operates on a STRICT DEADLINE and you will need to call to confirm the deadline and to get registered:

CU Career Services Help Desk: 303-492-4100 or General Information at 303-492-6541.

1. CSVC, the Career Services internship, carries 1 semester hour of credit that is pass/fail and DOES NOT, under any circumstances, count toward your degree requirements. If you pass the class the grade will not affect your GPA. However if you fail the course (by not submitting required coursework) that will impact your GPA.

2. Because CSVC does not count toward your degree requirements, we ask that you try to get credit through your academic department first. The paperwork required for the class asks you to confirm you investigated your options for receiving credit through your department and have been rejected (a conversation with your academic advisor meets this requirement).

3. You must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours to participate in this course. This is the only requirement to enroll and unfortunately this cannot be waived.

This plan requires you and your supervisor to fill out an online internship learning plan at the beginning of the semester to get enrolled and evaluations at the end of the semester. There is no class time for this course, just the forms.

Many students do both production and news writing for their Aurora 8 internship. You can get a jump on your competition by coming in as a volunteer if you are not yet eligible for formal internships. Internships and volunteer positions are unpaid, but rich in experience. There is less competition for spots Sept. to May. Contact: Senior Producer and Volunteer Supervisor, Mark Isenburg at: misenbur@auroragov.org, or 303-739-6606. www.auroragov.org/aurora8 (Production volunteers MUST be available Tuesdays 1-3 pm)

Dear Friends:
CU-Boulder Provost Russ Moore recently announced plans to create a new college or school of media, communication and information, in which our Journalism & Mass Communication program will find its new home.

The working concept for this school is both daring and inspiring: it will house journalism, advertising and design, communication, film studies, media studies and a new department of information science.

The news is even better if you read what CU Provost Russ Moore says in the university’s news release: “From this college, we will create working journalists, editors and media professionals, communication scholars, media experts, advertisers and media designers, filmmakers and film theorists, and experts in the emerging field of information architecture and design. The possibilities are truly exciting.”

The idea here is simple: bring together in one college or school all of the disciplines that engage with media and mass communication, and let them feed each other across individual programs. This means that a broadcast student can take courses in documentary filmmaking, media theory or digital design alongside journalism and the liberal arts. It means that advertising students will be able to take advantage of a more complete media design and production curriculum. It means that budding reporters and editors will learn not only the craft of reporting and editing but, through courses in communication or information architecture, develop a deep understanding of the impact of that reporting and editing.

By integrating journalism within these new interdisciplinary frameworks, CU will produce media professionals armed with both extensive knowledge and formidable skills in professional practice. They will enter the changing digital media market with confidence as potential leaders.

The new college or school requires the approval of the Board of Regents, so there is some distance to travel before it is fully formed and functional. But the exciting thing for our program is that the university has met its promise to create a genuinely new and rich environment for teaching journalism, advertising and media practice.

You’ll find more information in a letter to the CU-Boulder community from CU Provost Russ Moore https://academicaffairs.colorado.edu/academicreview/ and in the university’s press release.

Your support in this process has been critical, and remains critical to helping this dynamic new college or school take shape. I look forward to working with you on that effort in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Chris Braider,
Director
CU Journalism & Mass Communication

JMC’s annual Crosman lecture was delivered April 23 by former dean Wick Rowland, who recently retired as CEO of Colorado Public Television (CPT 12). Rowland, a veteran public broadcaster and media scholar, spoke about the financial and organizational hurdles that are holding public broadcasting back from its full potential at a time when the need for the service is stronger than ever. His speech was titled “ ‘A Public Trust’ in Jeopardy: An Insider’s Look at the Unresolved Constraints on U.S. Public Media.”

The Crosman lecture honors Ralph L. Crosman, the first director of CU’s journalism program. Crosman joined the CU faculty in 1921, the year before journalism became a formal academic department. He died in 1948.

You can watch a video of Rowland’s presentation here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELZj3pDZG-s&list=UUv_vNIla40zCHHPSrGoY3FA&index=1

The Spring International Media Certificate Advising event featured Denver medical doctor William Bolthouse speaking on the movie he produced with Academy Award winning Mira Sorvino and Dermot Mulroney called Trade in Innocents. Dr. Bolthouse trained in North Carolina as a family practice doctor. Since 1991, he has worked in suburban Denver, Frisco Colorado, Kenya, Togo, Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Romania, Guatemala and most recently, in Cambodia.

One of the required courses in the CU International Media Certificate focuses on global crises.

International media certificate students have developed bibliographies and written research papers on unreported angles on food distribution inequities, political corruption, genetically modified seeds, violence against women, the killing of female fetuses and infants, economic inequality, labor migration, climate change, Islamophobia, energy, nuclear weapons and most recently, the global gun industry. A large number of students across multiple departments write papers on human trafficking consistently. Why does this bother us so much?

Human trafficking is the second most lucrative criminal activity today. It is likely to overtake narcotics and the arms trade business soon, and may already have. The Spring advising event of the certificate featured two personal journeys against human trafficking: International Affairs senior Brent Crane and our featured speaker Dr William Bolthouse of Littleton, Colorado. Click here for excerpts of his talk.

Brent Crane spoke about his internship meeting with survivors of sexual trafficking in Mexico.

Brent Crane spoke about his internship with I Empathize, how it enabled him to write a research paper on sex trafficking in Cambodia, and then how he travelled to Mexico to meet victims of the trade. Click here for excerpts from Crane’s talk.

Dr William Bolthouse, the family practice physician from Denver, spoke about why he reached out to entertainment movies to combat sex trafficking of little girls. Dr Bolthouse did his medical training in North Carolina. Since 1991, he has worked in suburban Denver, Frisco Colorado, Kenya, Togo, Macedonia, Uzbekistan , Romania, Guatemala and most recently, in Cambodia.

On one of his many volunteer visits to Cambodia, Dr Bolthouse, his wife and three young daughters heard about the high US demand for young Cambodian girls: his film and his talk addressed how this changed their lives.
