The 50s

Kelly Kennedy (MA ’07) signs a copy of her book, “They Fought for Each Other: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Hardest Hit Unit in Iraq,” on April 8 after giving a talk at the SJMC. Kennedy, a reporter for Army Times and a former soldier, was a journalist embedded with the 26th Infantry Regiment’s Charlie Company in Bagdhad in 2007. At left is Charles Kinney, father of a soldier who killed himself, who flew in from Fort Worth, Texas, to have Kennedy sign a stack of her books. He told the audience that he initially was angry that she wrote about his son’s suicide but now understands that his son’s story illustrates the trauma war causes.
Jerry Kopel (’51) won The Soviet Jewry Freedom Award of 2009 for his work in helping to free three dissidents who were imprisoned by the Soviet government after a failed 1970 attempt to flee Russia. Kopel, now a retired state legislator, formed the “Committee to Free the Leningrad Three” with now retired Sen. Tilman Bishop. The ’90s
John F. Russell (’90) of the Steamboat Pilot & Today won second place for feature photo in the Colorado Associated Press Editor and Reporter awards. He also won third place for best news photograph and second and third place for best sports photograph from the Colorado Press Association. Russell received the awards in February.
James Amos (’91) recently made the switch from print to TV. After working for The Pueblo Chieftain for almost 10 years, he now works for KOAA-Channel 5 in Pueblo.
