The ’50s

Garrett Ray (’59) was awarded the Eugene Cervi Award at the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors’ annual conference in June. The group’s most prestigious award recognizes newspaper editors who have consistently acted in the conviction that “good journalism begets good government.” Ray edited and published the Littleton Independent in Colorado from 1966 to 1981 before joining the journalism faculty at Colorado State University. He retired in 2001.

The ’70s

Rebecca English (­’75) is a sustainability consultant and technical editor at Rebecca English and Associates. English is interested in promoting sustainability for business operations and residences and is currently working on the launch of leading-edge energy auditing software. She is also working on the launch of a startup nonprofit dedicated to education of municipal officials and staff on how to develop renewable energy projects, energy efficiency programs and other sustainable initiatives.

Tim Alger (MA ’79) is deputy general counsel of Google in Mountain View, Calif., where he manages the company’s litigation and trademark and employment legal work. John Leach (’74, MA ’79)
is a visiting professor of journalism at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He is also continuing his position as managing partner at Digital Strategies, an Internet-consulting business in Phoenix, and as a faculty associate at Arizona State University.

The ’80s

Pamela Erkenbeck Krider (’82) launched a new consulting firm in August that focuses on corporate communications, professional coaching and culture change. Krider has 25 years of experience in strategic management consulting to senior management at Fortune 500 companies, including Honeywell, Motorola, Limited Brands, Qwest and Coors Brewing Co. She is a board member for the CU Alumni Association.

Michael O’Keeffe (’82) is a member of the award-winning New York Daily News sports investigative team. O’Keeffe and his colleagues – Teri Thompson, Nathaniel Vinton and Christian Red – are the authors of American Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America’s Pastime, which was published by Knopf and released in May. The Daily News I-Team took first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ investigative category this year for their coverage of Clemens in the wake of the Mitchell Report on baseball and steroids.

Julie Zafiratos (’82) is a film and TV producer in Los Angeles. This year she worked on the fourth season for “Dress My Nest,” a home makeover show starring Thom Filicia (“Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”). Zafiratos also just produced two commercials for the Mattel ToyStore fall campaign.

Tom Costello (’87) played a major role in reporting “Bailout Talks Collapse,” a story that was awarded a national Emmy in September for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast. The piece ran on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Costello has been a correspondent in NBC’s Washington bureau since 2005.

Marcia Jarmel (MA ’87) is a documentary producer and director. She recently premiered her new documentary film, “Speaking in Tongues,” to four sold-out screenings. The film, which looks at the debate surrounding bilingual education in the U.S., was given the Audience Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Screenings continue to be held around the country, and it will be broadcast on public television in 2010.

Gina Amato Berg (’89) is the director of development for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to education and research on causes and treatment of breast cancer and the search for its cure.

Stacy Alan Brethauer (’89) is an associate staff physician in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. After graduating from CU, he attended medical school at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Md., and received his M.D. degree in 1993. Brethauer completed his general surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and then was assigned as an air wing flight surgeon in Okinawa, Japan. In 2004, he deployed with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to Taqaddum, Iraq. He joined the staff at the Cleveland Clinic in 2007.

Tanya Ishikawa (’89) produces a show that was recently selected as a finalist in the WAVE Awards, which honor the best programs in public access television in the West. The show, “In the Loop: Colorado Filmmaking,” features filmmaking activities and films from Colorado. Ishikawa is a professional writer and editor, producing content for newspapers, magazines, Web sites and video production. She is also a Federal Heights City Council member and a mother of a 4-year-old son.

Scott Takeda (’89) has been following his passions this year. On top of running his story-focused marketing company in Denver, Short Sirkit Creative Inc., and playing trumpet in a concert band, Takeda said he recently acted in two feature films and guest-starred in a CW Network dramatic series.

The ’90s

Amy Jewett Sampson (’90), after two pregnancies followed hard on the heels of an adoption, was faced with the problem of raising three children under the age of 3 and found herself struggling with multiplied parenting woes. Sampson, a media relations consultant and former spokeswoman and policy adviser for former Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, turned her adventure into a how-to guide for other parents. Her book, “Mamma Mania: Managing the Craze of 0-5 Year Olds,” gives tips on getting kids to sleep, encouraging healthy eating and dealing with the terrible 2s.

Priscilla Slocum Lacy (’91) is a part-time teacher and public relations professional. She serves on the board of the nonprofit CenterStage Theater Company. Lacy said she enjoys spending time with her three children and volunteering her PR skills to the local public schools and her community. She lives in Louisville.

Naomi Binkley (’96)
is the co-founder and owner of Fireside Production, a professional video production service, which specializes in creating corporate, promotional and business-events videos. The company was recently named a finalist for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Emerging Business of the Year. Binkley founded the company four years ago after a decade as a television news producer, host and writer, most recently at KDVR-Fox 31 News in Denver.

Jodi Rave (’96), an award-winning Native American affairs reporter and columnist, is leaving newspapers to write a book about Elouise Cobell and the Indian Trust Fund lawsuit.

Dennis M. Wilkins (Ph.D. ’96)
was recently promoted to the rank of professor in the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Bonaventure University in western New York. Wilkins has taught in the school for 13 years, following a 20-year career as a journalist. In 2006, he received the annual faculty Award for Professional Excellence in Teaching.

Katrina Martin Davenport (’99) presented her paper “The Owl and the Pussycat: Animal Visitations in Dreams and Waking Life” at the 25th annual International Association for the Study of Dreams conference in Chicago in June. Davenport is a master’s candidate in consciousness and transformative studies at John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, Calif. She is also a photographer and a mixed-media artist.

The ’00s

Ryan Chiaverini (’00) is the weekend sports anchor at WLS-TV in Chicago; he also hosts “The Chicago Huddle,” a 30-minute show on the local scene. Chiaverini moved to Chicago in 2006 from KUSA-Channel 9 in Denver.

Darcy Couch (’00) is in her fifth year at the University of Southern California, where she is assistant sports information director. She was voted Staff Member of the Year by the student-athletes and athletic department staff. Her job was also profiled in ESPN the Magazine in February.

Kami Carmann (’01) joined KMGH Channel 7 as the weekend sports anchor and sports reporter. She returned home to Denver from a job with NewsChannel5 in Nashville, Tenn., where she was a sports reporter and covered the Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators, University of Tennesee and Vanderbilt University, among others. At CU she was a four-time letterwinner and two-time captain of the women’s basketball team.

Kathryn Cook (’01) has been named to the 2009 Joop Swart Masterclass, a venerable and extremely competitive honor granted by the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam. Cook will join 11 other young photographers this fall as they delve into the technical, ethical and journalistic side of their work with the help of six photojournalism masters.

Sara Gillesby (’01) is assignment manager for Associated Press Television News in New York City. Gillesby is responsible for coverage of major news events in and around the New York region for an international and online audience. Before that, she was a senior producer with AP television.
