CU senior releases EP, sells music to Justin’s Nut Butter
With a successful kickstarter project, the release of his EP, and the purchase of an original jingle by a national company, JMC senior Petey Purcell is evidence that musical creativity paired with entrepreneurship can be profitable.
As an advertising major and technology and media arts minor, Purcell has been able to use the business-savvy and branding skills he learned from school and apply them to creating music.
His newly released EP is the outcome of a lot of hard work and entrepreneurship. After Purcell began recording with producer Jeff Cormack at Dynamite Laser Beam, an audio production studio in Denver, he was inspired to create a kickstarter to finance a recording project.
After working night and day cultivating funding for 30 days, he was able to raise nearly $6,000. Purcell used this to pay for producers and studio time, and achieve his goal of recording his EP.
Purcell still records music regularly at Dynamite Laser Beam. He and Cormack teamed up with owner Chris Eagleton to form a production team that creates music to shop around to A&R and labels.
Purcell also used his musical and business skills during an internship with Justin’s Nut Butter in Boulder to accomplish his first creative audio branding project.
While working as sales and marketing intern for Justin’s Nut Butter, Purcell used his knowledge of branding and songwriting to write two jingles for the company. Working with Cormack, his producer, Purcell recorded two original jingles to be used in web videos, radio and television.
Justin’s Nut Butter loved his project, and bought both jingles.
According to Purcell, his education in advertising has taught him how to convey a brand to the public eye and ear.
“It’s taught me how people perceive things, and how to most effectively get something to be heard,” says Purcell.
Purcell plans on continuing recording with Dynamite Laser Beam. He describes his EP as indie pop, but not limited to one genre. As he puts it, his music is “anything that organically comes out.”
